AUSTIN HIGH ALUM RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS AWARD

This year, the recipient of the Lady Bird Johnson Humanitarian of the Year Award is Dr. Charles F. Pelphrey, an alumnus of Austin High School, the University of Texas, and Southwestern Medical School. This award is presented annually by the Central Texas Chapter of the American Red Cross to a Central Texan who has gone to extraordinary lengths to save the life of another. Dr. Pelphrey was the first licensed pathologist in Austin; he founded Clinical Pathology Laboratories and the local blood bank. He was also instrumental in making available the Salk Polio Vaccine and Pap tests for women. His devotion to the study and practice of medicine has undoubtedly saved thousands of lives and has facilitated pathology in the early detection and cure of numerous diseases. Dr. Pelphrey will receive his award at the Heroes of Central Texas Awards banquet to be held April 18 at the Renaissance Hotel (Arboretum). This event is also the sole fundraiser for the Central Texas Chapter of the American Red Cross. The evening’s fare will consist of a silent auction, awards ceremonies and a very fine dinner.
