Forum-Rio Grande Campus

Brian Schenk – Archivist Emeritus Jenna McEachern – Archivist Angie Reeve, Librarian From 1925 to 1975, Austin High School was located at 1212 Rio Grande Avenue. Today that location is the Rio Grande Campus of the Austin Community College. The building had actually been built in 1915 as the John Allan Junior High School. Mr. Allen had made a major contribution to Austin schools in the 1890s, and the new building was constructed to provide additional opprtunities for girls and boys. Special programs in “manual training” and “domestic arts” were offered at the Rio Grande site in the early years.

2009-2010 ANNUAL NEWSLETTER

Last year’s Dedication Day was a tremendous success.  The talent of our school population was reflected in the student body and by our honorees: Distinguished Alumni: Gerald “Jerry” Adams, Class of 1956 , FBI Agent, Humanitarian; and Jeff Gray, Class of 1967, Civic Leader; Honored Faculty: Roy Bartlett, Photography Teacher, 1973-2007. You may visit the Hall of Honor, located adjacent to the Jacquelyn McGee Performing Arts Center and the Band Hall, at any time. The Brian Schenk Archives, based in the Library, are also available to you at any time. We maintain a class ring collection – the third largest in the nation; a Comet collection; a collection of books by Austin High authors, faculty, and alumni; and the Archives containing a wide variety of memorabilia from Austin High’s past. We encourage your donations to any of the collections. Keep your eyes open in antique shops which carry old yearbooks or other Austin High memorabilia. Bring the items on Dedication Day or on any school day to the second floor office. Please include your name and address with your donation.  Surplus Comets,  Mr. Maroo lapel pins, Mr. Maroo earrings, and Mr. Maroo necklace pendants are always on sale.  Contact Ms. Angie Reeve for more information.

SPECIAL PROJECTS

AWARDS AND ELECTIONS: The Student Steering Committee of the Hall of Honor “builds” the files on nominees for the Hall of Honor.  We would appreciate contributions from former students and/or retired faculty.  We are certain that you had a favorite teacher from your years at the school or a classmate who has gone on to do great things.  To start a file or add to an existing one, simply send a letter of nomination to Ms. Angie Reeve, Hall of Honor Advisor, or send an email to areeve@austinisd.org. SCHOLARSHIPS: Through a rigorous voting process, the top 1% of the current Senior Class is identified as Maroon Society. In 2002,  Maroon Society recipients began to receive scholarship money from the Hall of Honor Endowment Fund. If you or your business would like to donate to the Endowment,  please contact Ms. Cohlmia, Ms. Joucken, or Ms. Reeve. INSTALLATION CEREMONY: Installation this year will take place before the Grand Assembly. Inductees will be presented their plaque and the Austin High School Continuing Education Foundation will be presenting their scholarships at the Installation ceremony.

Loyal Forever,

Leyla Cohlmia                                     Esther Joucken                       Angie Reeve
