Hall of Honor Steering Committee Nominations Process
Each year the Steering Committee recognizes one or two Honored Faculty and one or two Distinguished Alumni.
Nominations can be received until the end of December from any alumni who have knowledge of:
–An alumnus who has led a life of Merit that brings credit to the story of Austin High. Such persons are elected on MERIT.
–A teacher or administrator who stood above the rest and deserves – even after the passage of years – our recognition.
Interested persons may send a Letter of Nomination to the following address:
Hall of Honor Student Steering Committee Advisor
Stephen F. Austin High School
1715 West Cesar Chavez Street
Austin, Texas 78703
Please, in your letters, emphasize the MERIT of the nominee’s life. How do they stand out against the crowd? Nominations received after the preliminary selection process has ended will be considered with the next year’s nominations.
It is important to understand the “selection process”.
First of all, “nomination” is not enough. The process includes a “File Review” in January and early February to select the “Most Complete Files”.
Then, after 6-10 “Finalist Files” are selected by the student group, a Community-Faculty-Student Selection Committee will review the “Most Complete Files” and make a determination of the one or two persons to be recognized in that year. Nomination Files of those not selected remain active for 9 additional years until they are retired. Any person whose file has been retired may be “renominated” and the complete retired file will be brought back into consideration. The selection of the Finalists is usually complete by the end of March and the Honorees are notified in late March and early April. Installation ceremonies are a major element of Dedication Day, held the end of April each year. The date for this year is Thursday, April 21, 2011.
So, it is very important to round up a dozen or more people who agree with the Nominator. One letter won’t do it. And letters should emphasis the MERIT of the nominated person. Not just that they are a loving father and husband, or that they worked for XXX Company for 25 years, or taught for 36 years.
Remember that it is very important to “build a file” for a person nominated for the honors of the HOHSC. In the final selection, persons who have no knowledge of the nominated person base their votes on the information contained in the Nomination File. We thank those who make nominations, and we hope this explanation will motivate people to do more than “write a letter”. Questions or comments may be sent to Angie Reeve, Hall of Honor Advisor. areeve@austinisd.org
